Fernando was awarded Best of Breed at the first special, National Specialty week!! He beat close to 40 other champions, many Best in Show winners. Friday, at the National Specialty, he was awarded Best of Opposite, again beating Best in Show dogs, including last year’s National Specialty winner. What an honor for such a young dog! I see a great future for Fernando!

Keep on runnin’ Roman!

notafraidofblackcat.jpgHi Debby, Julie,   attached are shots from our last CPE agility trial, end of Sept., St. Cloud, MN.   Roman did really well on the Saturday, getting some Qs in the games and jumpers, one standard course. Sunday was very hot, we did ok but needed a 2 hour cool down in the car with the ac.   Roman is starting to do the weaves with enthusiasm, and a little hip hop through them.    The picture of the shute, he’s not going through, but backing out.  That’s an obstacle we need work on.  Everyone was laughing, I didn’t get it until after the run.  The photographer said he went through half way, then did a perfect straight line reverse.  Leave it to a Lhasa to have some creativity.  Use any photos,  permission given by crystalimagepetphotography.com.  Thanks for your time.  Mary R.

Panchen question..

Gail asked: Wondered what it was like for Panchen after he had his surgery and he couldn’t see at all, what was his mental status?

Panchen couldn’t see at all before his surgery, so the only change was in his spirit. He was back to his old self. The headaches must have been awful. The morning after his surgery, he’d already started his Panny Dance. It was only in retrospect I realized I hadn’t seen that for months. His surgery was done by a specialist. One of the reasons I went to Dr. Hammond rather than my own vet was to learn if he had any vision. Not sure what, if any, options I would have had if there was some vision. He was completely blind. One of the reasons glaucoma is diagnosed much earlier in people is the headaches. A dog can’t tell you about headaches; a person knows. The pressure that builds up in the eyeball creates the headaches. So, to answer your question, his mental status was much improved after surgery. He hadn’t been able to see for ??? a few weeks prior to surgery. The surgery relieved his pain. For that, he was happy!

Thief…

Vickie sent this:

Yup, I’m a thief.  I stole Kathy R’s ric-rac Apso and used it to create a quilt block.  One of the lists I’m on, a gal’s husband has pancreatic cancer and somebody had the idea of getting a group together to do quilt blocks and send to her to complete the quilt.  She’s been wanting to do a “dog quilt” this summer and didn’t get to with her husband’s illness.  Anyhoo, I volunteered to do a block.  Why, I have no idea since I’m not generally known for my crafty talents.  Only thing I can figure out is I must have had one too many cocktails the night I said “yes.”  Actually, I’m pretty certain I was drinking … otherwise I’d have never said yes!  In any event, it’s done …

Trains, trains and automobiles

Here’s a photo I took during my first ever train ride. The awesome curved window was in an abandoned train depot, next to a very uninteresting box building that currently serves as Grand Junction’s depot. For our 30th wedding anniversary Rick and I took a train to Reno, complete with a sleeper. From there, we rented a car and *quickly* got out of Reno to see the more natural sights in the Sierra Nevadas.

Speaking of Aaron..color genetics fun!

When Aaron was born, his red/gold brindle pattern was apparent. His hair grew longer; the brindle pattern became less and less visible. As he matured, the greying factor began to work upon the brindle hair. He underwent a transition from what appeared to be a gold and white parti-color dog to a black and white parti-color dog.

Some of his offspring, including Frankie, Robby and Allie, inherited his brindle coloration. See more photos of this phenomenon.

The Downside of Inbreeding

C.A. Sharp, the author of this piece Vickie shared with me and numerous other great articles, participated on Dr. John Armstrong’s genetics list. She starts this article with a quote from Hellmuth Wachtel Ph.D., another participant on that most excellent list (which has been defunct basically since the death of Dr. Armstrong). Hellmuth, a zoologist, not a dog breeder, is quite radical in his views. However, he, along with several other participants with ‘out-of-the-box’ views, are the people that indirectly gave me the courage to take on the Gompa dog project. C.A. is self-taught, extremely intelligent, has co-authored some scientific pieces with researchers and breeds Australian Shepherds. She is generous with sharing her many excellent articles. You can find read more of her articles, along with other articles along similar lines on the Genetics page of the FFT website.

Edmund’s a Champion!!

Today Edmund officially became Champion FFT No Wine Before Its Time! The serious quest for his title began August 18…from start to finish less than two months. I’ve lost track of how many Champions Julie and I have bred and/or owned, but he’s the 13th Champion bred by Kaylee. Truely a team effort, Kaylee handled him to his second major, the weekend of the Twin Cities Lhasa Apso Specialties. Debby handled him the weekend of the Colorado Specialty. And, with the exception of Tammy handling him to his first point, Julie did the rest.

Am I excited? Yes! Edmund is classic in type and my favorite color. Red! I’m looking forward to him coming back to Colorado soon.

This is fascinating. Thanks Faye for sharing!

Canine Lameness Learning Module

About Motion Capture:
This learning module makes use of optical motion capture data. For the motion capture, reflective round markers were placed at the joints and key locations on the dogs.

Learning Objective:
1. to be able to identify patterns of movement associated with healthy gait, hip dysplasia and cranial cruciate ligament rupture.
